CAE Practice: Report

Science Museum’s Visit

Introduction

The principal aim of this report is to provide a description of the science museum and assess whether it might be an appropriate place to organize future visits for students.

Present circumstances

I recently visited the well-known science museum in our town that, due to some renovations that were taking place, was closed but just reopened this past week.

Findings

The following were the main observations of what there is to see and do in the museum.

Firstly according to what was observed, the first floor was completely renovated and it was divided into four scientific exhibitions. One display was for endangered  species of Latin America. In it you could watch a movie and come up with solutions to help solve the problem. The second and the third exhibition were related. Both had to do with astronomy, but one was about galaxies and stars, whereas the other one had telescopes to look at the sky. Both exhibitions open at 9:00 am, however there is a special night tour to watch the stars. Finally, in the last exhibition, wax figures of famous scientists with their discoveries written under were displayed.

Taking into consideration all the activities the museum has and everything it has to offer, the science museum would be a great place to organize a future field-trip for high school students. The information it offers is part of the curriculum of the school and the activities are appropriate for students between 11-18 years old. It is because of this that it is crucial to include it in the school’s visits.

CAE Practice: Proposal

One-day study trip suggestions

Introduction

The principal aim of this proposal is to shine light on some places our class can go for the one-day study visit. Furthermore, the most preferable place to visit will be recommended.

Current situation

A survey was carried out to students who will be participating in the one-day study trip and the results yielded that 90% of them wanted to learn about different historical places specifically in our town. The remaining 10% claimed they would rather visit somewhere far away from the city, however, they expressed that if the trip takes place in an unknown historical place, then they would not mind visiting a location nearby. A number of concerned students also expressed they would like to visit a place inside a building rather than out in the open due to the weather.

Recommendations

Taking into consideration the results obtained from the respondents, the following places are suggested:

  • The Modern Art Museum because its paintings are a true reflection of what was going on at the time period they were painted.
  • The Guardian Museum since it explains how the 1930 War started and it depicts how soldiers lived at that time.

From those two options, the most appropriate one would be to visit the Modern Art Museum since it is close to our school so we would not need buses and because they have a special programme for high school students.

Should these recommendations be taken into consideration, the one-day study trip is bound to be a success.

CAE Practice: Email

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for your email, I imagine you are very scared. I was just like you last year before the quiz! I think it’s great that you reached out, I would’ve  appreciated some tips before the competition also. You know we didn’t win, but we did get to the semi-finals, so I know a thing or two.

The most important thing you have to do is to review the contents. There are usually some guidelines with the topics that will be in the competition. I advise you to get together with the team and look for as much information as you can. I did it by myself and it was exhausting, but if you do it with other team members, it won’t be so tedious.

Another thing you can do is practice. Write some questions on an index card and on the back write the answers. Then you can ask someone, a family member or a friend, to read the question and you  answer it as if you were in the competition. I can even help you! Just tell me when and where, and I’ll be there.

At last, you can get together with your team and pretend that you are in the competition. It is a good way to add some pressure. Divide the team into two and play against each other. To make it more entertaining, you can add a prize. For me, that’s the most helpful tip I can give you.

Tell me how it goes. Good luck!

Kisses,

Sofía.

Dear Sir or Madam,

In response to the question posed during the teacher-student meeting, I am writing to you to give you my humble opinion regarding the ways our college can cut down the use of plastic bottles.

It cannot be denied that our institution is not complying with the new government regulations related to the amount plastic bottles that can be disposed. Almost 80% of our students buy water bottles every single day and only use them once. To avoid this problem, which could result in fines for the college, drinking fountains with bottle fillers should be placed all over campus. Additionally, free water bottles, hopefully made of recycled plastic, should be gifted to students so as to incentive the usage of fountains.

Not only would this plan help reduce the consumption of single-use water bottles, but it would also help students save money. Since there would be many fountains, drinking water would be available all the time, saving them also quite a lot of time. There would be no need to make long queues to buy water.

This idea is only viable if students co-operate. For that to happen, the college should bring awareness, and it is claimed by experts that the most appropriate way to do it is by making them feel involved in the process. Talks about the importance of reducing the use of plastic bottles should be given students for the other students and their opinion should always be taken into consideration. I very much hope you consider this plan.

Yours faithfully,

Sofía Gutiérrez.

Friends: a five star series
Have you ever had one of those days where when you get home you just want to turn the TV on and relax? Well if that is your case, then the TV series friends is what you should watch. This hilarious 12-season series has gained many awards and it is a public’s favorite.
The complex yet entertaining characters make this comedy worth watching, and their lightweight dialogues will keep you hooked. Even though it does not have suspense, the way human interaction is portrayed is enough to make you want to watch all the episodes in one sitting. This is what makes Friends so acclaimed, it feels like you are watching real-life interactions.
The characters are not all though, the warm coffee shops, where they all get together, or the flat of one of the characters, also are part of the charm of the series. It is impossible not to think of a mug, or the iconic purple door when someone mentions the Friends.
What is particularly interesting is the plot. It follows the life of six friends: Monica, Ross, Chandler, Rachael, Phoebe, and Joe. The TV series shows how they navigate life, being interpersonal relationships the main focus.
Overall, friends has had the success it has had because it is a series that shows how people live their every day lives, but it mixes it with humor. I would 100% recommend it to anyone who is looking for something to watch that does not have too much drama. It is a must watch.

Facilities that will improve the city

There is no point in denying that the seafront of this town is its most visited place. It is also impossible to ignore the high numbers of unemployed people. Therefore, if planning permissions are granted, the chosen facilities must help address our community’s problems. Hence, building either a hotel or coffee shops and restaurants seems to be the most practical solutions.
Firstly, apart from giving jobs to the people who will build the facilities, they will also give locals the opportunity for jobs. To have hotels or coffee shops and restaurants, you need workers, so new positions as waiters, receptionist, cleaners, and many more will be offered. Also, probably more people will be coming to the city, so other workers like tourist guides will likely benefit from this.
Secondly, and related to what was previously said, the town will probably receive many more tourists. This will bring more income to the town, which will be of great help for the authorities who are struggling to meet peoples demands due to the lack of money. The town’s streets, which have been a problem lately, could finally be repaired.
Overall, any facility built on the seafront will be beneficial for the community, but the two options stated before are the most convenient ones. Nevertheless, if only one could be chosen, then building a hotel is what will actually help the majority of citizens. By giving jobs and attracting tourists, this option seems like the most appropriate one to obtain the planning permission.

Adult’s influence of children

Younger people, especially children, are often compared to sponges since they are at an age where they absorb all the knowledge given to them. It is imperative, therefore, that we do our best to teach them all the necessary skills and values so they can become exceptional citizens. For this, I believe it is our responsibility to be a positive influence on younger generations through two primary methods: by giving them rules and setting an example.

Firstly, as adults and the ones that have experienced and learned more from life, we should set an example and try to be the finest role models conceivable. If children have someone they can look up to, then they will adopt all the virtuous traits of that person. Nevertheless, sometimes this might not work as ideally as we would ,given the inherent imperfections of every individual, so the negative traits of the role model may also be adopted.

The secondary and notably efficacious approach to influence children is to give them rules. The whole world is limited by rules, whether they are implicit social expectations or explicit laws, and adhering to these norms is necessary for societal stability. Therefore, people should be prepared for this from a young age so they can seamlessly integrate into society. By giving rules, clarifying their significance, and explaining what could happen if you do not follow them, we are conditioning children in an effortlessly manner to be good people.

Overall, I strongly believe that if we set an example and most importantly, give youngsters rules, we can profoundly influence the behavioral patterns of young individuals in a positive manner
